Isabel has a wish. Her wish is to walk.

10 year old Isabel Martin has yet to experience the joy of taking her first step. An operation to remove a benign spinal tumour saw Isabel become paraplegic at the tender age of 8 months. Based on their knowledge at the time, doctors held little hope Isabel would ever walk, whilst they were certain that she would suffer a plethora of secondary health complications.

Today, however, thanks to new, groundbreaking specialist treatments there is a strong chance Isabel will walk and that the numerous secondary complications can be minimized, but she needs your support.

Innovative therapies, the result of clinical research, are enabling people in the US and Europe to walk again. Since taking part in a trial, Isabel has experienced staggering results – she can now wiggle her toes and move and feel her legs.

While the potential for Isabel to one day walk exists, and many of the medical complications can be averted the cost of these therapies limits her access to them.

Project Walk Update

During Sept/ Oct 09 Isabel attended Project Walk, one of the World's most innovative programs for children and adults with Spinal Cord Injury. The program exceeded all our expectations. Each day Isabel thrived on the physical challenges and we witnessed significant physical improvements as well as experienced a sense of finding our place.

Back at home, Isabel is continuing the Project Walk Home program with the help of her family, and her physio Suzy Green. The improvements to her core strength and voluntary leg movements continue. Her 2010 first breakthrough has been to crawl, bringing each leg forwarded on request unassisted. She continues to benefit from regular sessions on the FES cycle.
